The Department of Religious Studies

In the case of majors, this training prepares students with sufficient talent and inclination to advance to graduate study in the field and in cognate fields.
  • Provides a solid foundation in Religious Studies as a discipline in the liberal arts for all university students in support of the General Education Curriculum (GEC).
  • Provides exemplary learning environments in order to cultivate in our students the ability to analyze data both critically and appreciatively, to express ideas clearly and effectively in speech and in writing, and to develop intellectual curiosity, attitudes of toleration, communities of inquiry, and understanding in the best tradition of the liberal arts.
  • Supports key interdisciplinary, University and College programs including Honors, Freshman Seminars, Writing Across the Curriculum, Residential College, Grogan College, Women’s and Gender Studies, African American Studies, International Studies, and the Graduate School.
  • Promotes faculty development in research and publication.
